ROBIN GEE, FOUNDER / DIRECTOR

Robin Gee holds an MFA in Contemporary Dance Choreography and Performance from Sarah Lawrence College and specializes in African, Caribbean, and Modern dance techniques. She is an Associate Professor at UNC Greensboro where she teaches African and Modern dance and lectures in the Dance Appreciation and dance history curricula. Her choreographic works have appeared in the North Carolina Dance Festival, Dumbo Arts, Philadelphia Fringe Festival, as well as resident works mounted on various colleges and universities around the world. In 2006 Ms Gee also formed her own company Sugarfoote Productions, a multipurpose service organization designed to expose communities to the richness of African and Diasporan cultural traditions. She is the recipient of the numerous research grants and awards for her work in dance documentation and preservation, including the West African Research Associations Post Doctoral Fellowship in African Research, the Central Piedmont Regional Artists Hub Grant, the American Association of University Women’s Postdoctoral Research Fellowship, and a US Fulbright Scholars Award. Her film works have been screened at festivals around the world.

B.J. SULLIVAN, director / coordinator

Choreographer and dance artist, B.J. received her BFA from The Juilliard School and her MFA from the University of Illinois Urbana Champaign.   Now an Associate Professor and Director of Graduate Studies in Dance at the University of North Carolina Greensboro, her research combines contemporary movement possibilities and body/mind practices with traditional techniques such ballet, Graham and Limón.  Known for creating Safety Release Technique, B.J. contributes an original and substantial body of informational work that has made a footprint in contemporary dance training globally.  B.J. is a faculty member at the American Dance Festival in Durham, NC.  She has given workshops and guest artist residencies at many national and international universities and professional schools.  Her choreography, for which she has received numerous grants and awards, has been presented throughout the US and abroad.
